A young girl is transported into a magical world of gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. In Disney’s magical take on the classic The Nutcracker, Clara wants a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box holding a priceless gift. A golden thread presented at her godfather’s holiday party leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. Marie witnesses a great battle between a vast army of toy soldiers led by the Nutcracker against a terrible platoon of mice commanded by the Mouse King. Follow Marie and Fritz's journey in the Kingdom of Dolls, through the Christmas Forest, past the Almond Milk Sea, and the Palace of the Marzipans.

An animated short produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, the contemporary twist on a classic tale sees Mickey, Donald and Minnie in the roles of the Nutcracker, the Mouse King and young Maria, respectively.

Sir Peter Wright’s 1984 version of The Nutcracker for The Royal Ballet, still performed by the Company, stays close to Hoffmann’s original tale. It emphasises Drosselmeyer’s mission to find a young girl – Clara – who can break the curse imposed by the Mouse King on his nephew Hans Peter and thus restore him to human form. References to Nuremberg and German Christmas traditions are present in the settings, with a kingdom of marzipan featured in Act 2.

The toys come to life at midnight, and after Masha helps the Nutcracker defeat attacking mice, he takes her to his kingdom, where he is later revealed to be a handsome Prince. The Prince and Masha fall deeply in love, but their "happy ending" has a morbid twist not found in any other "Nutcracker".

This was just beautiful in every aspect. The main merit is the phenomenal ballet score by Tchaikovsky,(all three ballets are just timeless, and I never tire of them) and I will say that I love the story by ETA Hoffmann, it is just a magical story and perfect for a Christmas tradition. There is also some fantastic choreography, especially seen in the Pax De Deux, and the scenery is dazzling. The dancing was superb; I was most impressed with the ballerina Natalya Arkhipova, a beautiful woman of wonderfully flexible technique. Everyone else was excellent as well, the Prince was handsome, the Mouse King was scary and Droselmeyer is certainly mysterious enough. All in all, a dazzling and perfectly charming production, with a wonderful performance from the ballerina, and choreography to die for.
